Like the Adams and March Brown, the Black Gnat is one of those fly names that rolls off the tongues of fly fishermen around the world.  Black gnats usually appear around mid-May, and their flight periods can last for several weeks. Like most terrestrial insects, they prefer warm, still, sunny days; however, during periods of warm settled weather, they can be on the wing on a moderately gusty day, usually where wooded banks give some shelter. Their mating swarms can be huge. Look for black gnats feeding on the nectar and pollen of riverside trees and flowers; hawthorn blossom is a favorite source of food.
